# If You Get a Data Breach Notice This Week, Do These Three Things First

A fresh consumer warning from South Carolina is a good reminder for all of us: **data breach notices are not junk mail.** On **July 6, 2026**, the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs said reported breaches had already affected **1,131,320 residents** in that state during the first half of the year. That does not mean everyone will become a victim of identity theft, but it does mean many people may need to act quickly if a notice arrives.

For older adults, the safest move is to keep the response simple. **First, change the password** for the affected account right away and turn on multi-factor authentication if it is available. **Second, check your bank, card, and credit activity** for anything you do not recognize. **Third, consider a fraud alert or security freeze** if the notice says sensitive personal information was exposed.

Do not call a phone number or click a link from a random follow-up text about the breach. Start with the notice itself, your bank's official website, or the free credit-report site at AnnualCreditReport.com. If a driver's license, passport, or other government ID may have been exposed, contact the issuing agency directly using a number you look up yourself.

The key idea is this: **do not panic, but do not wait.** A real breach notice is one of those messages that deserves calm action the same day you see it.
