Apple Released Important Updates for iPhone, iPad, and Mac

Apple released security updates on August 17 for current iPhones and iPads, several older models, and Macs running macOS Tahoe. Install through Settings or System Settings, not through a pop-up or unsolicited message.

Apple released fresh security updates on August 17, 2026 for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The updates fix problems involving websites, images, apps, audio, and core parts of the operating system. Apple says keeping software current is one of the most important ways to protect an Apple device.

For newer devices, the current versions are iOS 26.6.1 and iPadOS 26.6.1. Apple also released iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10 for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, plus the seventh-generation iPad. Macs running macOS Tahoe received macOS 26.6.2. That older-device support is especially useful if you have not replaced a dependable phone or tablet.

How to update safely

Plug the device into power or make sure the battery is well charged. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → General → Software Update. On a Mac, open System Settings → General → Software Update. Save your work and allow time for the device to restart.

Avoid fake update messages

Install the update only through the device's own Settings. Do not click an unexpected text, email, or website pop-up claiming that your Apple device is infected or asking you to call “Apple Support.” Real software updates do not require you to give a stranger remote access or buy gift cards.

Apple lists the new releases on its official security updates page. If Software Update says your device is current, no further action is needed.
