Before You Panic, Try Restarting the Device
A safe restart can solve many everyday phone and computer glitches. Here’s how to do it without confusing restart with reset.
Back to ArticlesWhen a phone, tablet, or computer starts acting strangely, the simplest fix is often the best place to begin: turn it off and back on.
A restart can clear temporary glitches that cause apps to freeze, websites to stop loading, sound to disappear, or the device to feel unusually slow. It does not erase your photos, messages, documents, or apps.
How to do it safely
- Save anything you are working on.
- Close any important documents or apps.
- Use the device’s Restart option when one is available. If you only see Shut Down, turn the device off, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it on again.
- Give it a minute or two to finish starting up before testing the problem again.
Restarting is different from resetting
This distinction matters:
• Restart means turning the device off and back on. Your information stays in place.
• Reset can remove settings—or even erase the device—depending on the option selected.
If a screen says Erase, Factory Reset, or Delete All Content, stop unless you are certain that is what you intend to do.
If restarting does not help
Write down what you were doing when the problem appeared and any message shown on the screen. That information makes it much easier for a family member or technician to help.
A restart will not fix every problem, but it is a safe and sensible first step for many everyday technology hiccups.
