How to Save and Find Your Parked Car with Google Maps

Before you walk away from your car, save its location in Google Maps. A few taps can guide you back later—and you can add a note or share the spot with someone you trust.

A large parking lot can look completely different when you return an hour later. At a hospital, airport, shopping center, or outdoor event, remembering “somewhere near the north entrance” may not be enough.

Google Maps can place a marker where you parked. When it is time to leave, the app can show the spot and give you walking directions back. You can also add a note—such as a garage level or row number—or share the location with a trusted companion.

This guide covers the manual method, which works on both Android phones and iPhones. It takes only a few seconds, but the best time to practice is on a familiar trip when you are not in a hurry.

Before you begin

  • Install or update the Google Maps app.
  • Make sure your phone’s Location setting is on.
  • Open Google Maps while you are still standing near your car.
  • Wait a moment for the blue dot to settle in the correct place.

The blue dot represents your phone’s approximate location. GPS can be less precise inside a concrete garage, so also notice the level, section, row, nearby elevator, or a landmark. A saved map pin is helpful, but it should not replace those clues.

Save your parking spot on Android

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap the blue dot that shows your location.
  3. Tap Save your parking.

Google Maps will mark the spot as your parking location. According to Google, the location stays saved until you clear it.

If the marker lands in the wrong place, tap the search bar and choose Parking location. Open the parking details, then tap Change location and move the marker to the correct spot. Button wording can vary slightly with app updates.

Save your parking spot on iPhone

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap the blue dot that shows your location.
  3. Tap Saved parking.

On an iPhone, Google says a manually saved parking location remains for up to 48 hours unless you remove it or begin driving again. Google Maps can also save parking automatically when it detects that you stopped driving, but manual saving is easy to confirm before you walk away.

If you do not see the parking choice, check that Google Maps has permission to use your location. On iPhone, open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services, and select Google Maps. Choose the level of access you are comfortable with. You do not need to grant broader access just to try the manual steps while the app is open.

Add a clue before you leave

A map marker may lead you to the correct part of a garage but not the correct floor. Before walking away, open the saved parking details and look for an option to add more information. Depending on your phone, you may be able to add a note or photo.

Useful notes include:

  • “Level 3, blue section, row C”
  • “Near the west elevator”
  • “Two rows from the pharmacy entrance”
  • A photo of the nearest row or level sign

Photograph signs and landmarks, not strangers or license plates you do not need. If parking has a time limit, set a separate alarm or timer; do not depend only on the map.

Find your car later

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap the search bar.
  3. On Android, look for Parking location. On iPhone, look for Saved parking or a pin labeled You parked here.
  4. Tap Directions and select the walking route.

Watch your surroundings while walking. The blue dot and route can drift, especially in garages, between tall buildings, or where the phone has a weak signal. Follow posted pedestrian paths and do not walk into traffic just because the route line points that way.

Share the spot with a companion

If a spouse, friend, or family member is meeting you, open the parking details and tap Share. Choose the person and messaging app carefully, then review the recipient before sending.

Sharing the parking marker reveals that location, so send it only to someone you trust. A simple alternative is to send the written garage level and row without sharing a map link.

Clear the old parking spot

After you return to the car, open the parking details and tap Clear or remove the saved parking location. Android may keep the marker until you clear it. Removing an old marker prevents confusion on your next trip.

Ask for help if...

If the phone shows a parking spot but you still cannot locate the car, stop walking and ask venue security, a parking attendant, or a trusted companion for help. Tell them the vehicle’s make, model, color, license plate, and any row or level clues you recorded. If you feel unsafe, move to a staffed, well-lit area rather than wandering alone.

A simple habit to remember

Use this three-part routine every time: save, note, check. Save the blue-dot location, note the floor or row, and check that the marker appeared before leaving. Those few seconds can make the end of a long appointment or busy outing much calmer.
